I am a little bit hesitant as I knock on Black’s front door. After yesterday’s kerfuffle over his name, I thought Black might want some time alone. But then he practically begged me to come back for dinner, so here I am.
When Black croaked out, “Please, I just can't…hear it, not from you,” my heart dropped out of my chest. For a long time, I have suspected Black’s loss was of a lover, and yesterday’s incident did everything to confirm that. Only the death of someone profoundly important could elicit such a reaction. And it hurts far more than I want to admit that he clearly doesn’t want me to know anything about it. Everyone arounds us knows what is going on and I, the other person smack dab in the middle of the situation, know close to nothing, just tiny hints from Black’s friends. The hints aren’t even helpful. All they do is remind me that Black won’t tell me…anything.
I sigh and glance around Black’s front lawn as I wait for him to answer the door. He is usually right on top of it. Maybe he changed his mind? Maybe he thought better of his invitation? Damn it, all of this not knowing is driving me up a wall. I turn from the door, considering walking back to my car. My heart hurts at the thought, but if he doesn’t answer the door soon, I won’t have a choice. Then Black’s door opens, and I turn around to see him standing in the doorway with Santa Claus oven mitts on his hands.
“You came back!” He exclaims and a bright smile cracks across his face.
His joy at seeing me burns away my anxiety, fear, and pain. I smile back at him and nod toward his oven mitts. “Baking?”
His eyes sparkle, and he laughs. “Yes, I made you something special.”
Flip-flop goes my heart in my chest. “You made me dessert?”
Black steps back, making room for me to enter his home. “And dinner.”
His happiness is infectious and soothing. Maybe I am making too much of yesterday. After all, we spent the rest of the day together, and he seemed to want me here desperately. I shake my head at myself and step through the door. The smell of dinner wafts from the kitchen and my stomach rumbles. Black leads the way toward his kitchen and dining area, and I shut the door behind me.
“Did you get a lot of work done today?” He throws the question over his shoulder, and I can hear some hesitancy in his tone. So I decide to answer honestly. If I want honesty from him, I should give it right back.
“No, mostly I worried about you. I wasn’t sure if you really wanted me to come back.”
Black turns into his kitchen and nods his head toward the dining nook off of the room. “Have a seat. I will have everything ready in a few more minutes.”
Not pleased he didn’t respond to my leading statement, I walk through the kitchen to the set the table.
